Men Are from Mars, Women/Venus

This video, hosted by Barbara Walters, is based on the work of author John Gray. His bestselling book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus deals with the premise that men, as Martians, and women, as Venusians, have extremely different ways of viewing coupledom. For this video, ABC News placed an ad in newspapers asking for couples looking to work on their marriages. They received thousands of responses, and from those they chose the six couples who appear in this special. Cameras follow the couples in their daily routines, and we also see them in discussion with each other, detailing the problems of their relationships with remarkable frankness. They don t shy away from discussing chores, intimacy, and the daily grind, and the picture is not always flattering. Next, each of the couples attends a John Gray lecture and workshops. After five more months, each couple is revisited (the entire process takes a total of eight months), all are in healthier, happier relationships. Part of the intrigue of this video is the voyeuristic glimpse into the couples lives. But more than that, each couple discusses issues that viewers can relate to. As the audience of the John Gray lecture nods along with his statements, it s hard not to find yourself thinking, Exactly! The video does not delve deeply into the philosophy espoused in Gray s book, rather, it shows his ideas in action. This video will benefit those looking for an introduction to the Martian-Venusian theories, and it will also serve well as a companion to the book. --Jenny Brown

Men, don t let your woman ram this down your throats - I work a long day. Is it so much to ask for dinner to be waiting for me? Am I evil just because I like to watch football and knock back a couple of six packs? Don t let your woman force this stuff on you. The author is not a real man - he s obviously been whipped good.

Gray captures the essence of male & female relationships - ABC joins in on a John Gray seminar in which couples are seeking help with their marital problems. It takes a very specific look at the very difficult and complicated world of the female and male relationships. He describes how the man and the woman communicate, deal with their problems, release stress, etc. and is able to show how each sex is different. John Gray shows how to accept the opposite sexes ways of dealing with everyday life situations through realizing each others differences. From this video, you will get a very large insight into the way that several couples began with difficulties, and through the advanced understanding of each other were able to work through their problems and make life worth living together.

A Mixed Bag According to One Book Group - Our book group felt that there were some interesting points made and the book provided good insights on certain relationship issues with a fresh perspective. The point was well taken that men and women communicate differently about emotional issues. However, the group consensus was that this book did not offer any really helpful answers. It was felt that the writing was over-clarified, too repetitive, and drawn out. It almost seemed that all one had to do was read the sentences in dark print. A shorter version would have been preferred. Many were of the opinion that the book was written for a woman s improvement. The tone was condescending, often slick and arrogant. Some of the solutions Gray offers verge on the chauvinistic: go shopping, call a friend, eat something delicious. Makes one think: HOGWASH! END

Recommend it to every individual desiring happy relationship - This book is flying out of the counters in the bookstores and I understand why: it just clears things up in the relationship with your mate (previous, actual or future). It is not a heavy psychology book theory that we usually read. This is clear demonstrations on how different men and women react in same situations and on how to understand and properly respond to each others needs. For me, it has shed new lights on how to work out my love relation with my actual spouse and to understand what I was doing wrong in the past. John Gray really keeps it simple and clear. END
